Maelasta Concert Kirkton Church 23 January 2011

Over 90 people came out to Kirkton Church on the afternoon of 23 January, shaking off the late Winter chill and seeking the warmth of live music with a like minded audience at the third Kirkmahoe Concert. There is no doubt that some of us were not quite sure what to expect. But what followed exceeded most of our expectations.

Matthew McCallister (guitar) and Feargus Hetherington (violin) are graduates of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where they met as students. They play under the name Maelasta. With wit and intelligence they took us though a programme of duets and solo pieces that spanned the classical world, contemporary composition, Scottish traditional and tango. For some it was the 18th and 19th century pieces by Molino, Paganini and Gragnani that stirred the spirit. Others were taken to another place by the solo guitar performance of Cuban composer Leo Brouwer’s Suite Number 2. The duet on Libertango was also outstanding. Then there were beautiful performances of Scottish tunes: by Chris Stout (who will be playing at Kirkmahoe in late May), by Ronald Stevenson (once the Rev Almond’s music teacher, we learned) and not forgetting Peter Maxwell Davies’ much-loved Farewell to Stromness.
Matthew and Feargus explained the pieces, joked with the audience and each other and then switched effortlessly to playing of great virtuosity and passion. We liked them and loved their music. At the end the applause rang on, the feet were stomping and there were cries for more. The encore was a very well received piece by Django Reinhardt. Then to finish off, Feargus played Ae Fond Kiss, unaccompanied and unadorned. The audience hummed along beautifully, content with the feast of music they had enjoyed.
Tea and cakes followed, kindly organised by members of the Church. We got to chat to the musicians and linger on for a while. It was great way to spend an afternoon in January. And also time to look forward to the next Kirkmahoe Concert on 26 March, when the Joel Allison Quartet will play a set of ‘chamber jazz’ in the beautiful surroundings of the Barony Church!

Water Supply Problems

For those of you who were without water for more than 24hrs due to Scottish Water

I have been informed by one of the complaints managers at Scottish Water that people may be entitled to compensation of £10 per every 12hrs if their water was off for more than 24 hrs.

I am not exactly sure about qualifying criteria, but it seems that you would have had to have phoned them and let them know, you may need a job number from Scottish Water, and it would need to have been their pipes that were frozen.

If you phoned Scottish Water and they did not give you a job number, they may still have a record of your call(s), especially if they later came and fixed your pipes.

You can apply for a GSS payment on the 0845 601 8855 helpline number or you can send an email to customer.concerns@scottishwater.co.uk

Any problems, please get back to me

Water Situation

Hello Everyone

Happy New Year!

Our water is still off (since 25th Dec) which is very inconvenient, but perhaps cannot be helped. However, my neighbours and I have been given the run around by Scottish Water with wrong information and not really taking any note of our phone calls until day 8 so now they are delivering bottled water to us.

Last night on the Scottish News they said that Scottish Water believe only about 200 houses are without water across Scotland - I have just phoned SW since so few people are suppopsed to be affected and they said they would send someone to look. As I had to hang on for 15mins I do not believe their figures, and the reason the figures are so low is because they did note take proper note of the calls they have received

I am therefore proposing to make a formal complaint to Scottish Water and our MSPs about the situation. If anyone else has had the same experience, please could you let me know

If you are still without water they will deliver bottles to you, but you seem to need to persist and get a works order number

Best Wishes
Jean Muir

Happy New Year

Kirkmahoe News Wishes Everyone a Happy New Year.
This should make you smile especially those of you who are dealing with having no water. It is noted that the water bottles left for us at the pump in Kirkton are now finished. The Supermarkets seem to have good stocks of bottled water.
