Dyking Course 9th-10th April Book your place now

A 2 day course run by Dave Goulder as an introduction to dry stone walling

Dave is a Dry Stone Walling Association (DSWA) Master Craftsman and has 40 years experience in building and training.

A great believer in high standards he has been a DSWA examiner since 1995 and has worked in Canada and the USA as well as throughout the UK as a trainer and examiner.

This course consists of safety procedures, selecting stone and building walls in disrepair and will relay these skills in a hands-on field environment. Small numbers ensure lots of one to one instruction and by the end of the course you will have the skills needed to keep your walls in good repair. If you want to go further and achieve certificated qualifications Dave will be able to give advice on the way forward. Check out his work on http://www.davegoulder.co.uk
The cost is £75 per person including lunch and hot/cold drinks depending on weather. All dietary needs catered for.

The course will be held at Sunnybrae in Duncow, parking is easy and off road Google Map DG1 1TB for directions.

Date of the course is 9th/10th April 2014

Contact Irene Paterson for further information and if you have any questions regarding the course.

Warning Parvovirus in Cumbria

Dog owners.if you have not already had your pet vaccinated against this disease, you are urged to take action now. This was recently featured on TV which noted that Kennels have been in quarantine in Cumbria due to a dog dying of this disease.

If you have a puppy and it is not yet vaccinated go along to your vet and get this done immediately. If you intend getting a puppy do not get it from a puppy farm. Make sure you see both parents and that you are happy with the surroundings in which the pup lives. A puppy should have had its first vaccination when you purchase it, and you should be given a vaccination card.

To learn more about this terrible disease in dogs please

There is a veterinary surgery here now in the old Police Station at Heathall where you can get this done

Good Morning All
After some respite from me and the severe weather, we are expecting some significant weather over the next few days.
Please take time to ready both the Met Office Update (below) and the Flood Guidance Statement (attached).
I have also included summarised conversations from our Flood Risk Team/SEPA for your information (below).
We will of course keep you updated on any changes.
As all indicators are at YELLOW we will not be initiating an Information Gathering Cell at this point.
Please feel free to distribute Met Office and Flood Guidance Statement throughout your community contacts.
Many thanks
Steven
FROM Met Office -
There’s more rain on the way for us all today, and again on Saturday morning. Here’s a quick overview of the forecast over the next few days, along with information on the Yellow Warning for Rain which has been issued for a broad southwestern area of Scotland later today:
Summary:
  • A band of rain will spread across all parts of Scotland during this afternoon and evening, before clearing southern Scotland during the early hours of Friday morning. A Yellow (Be Aware) Warning for Rain has been issued to raise awareness of this. This covers Dumfries & Galloway, the western Borders, West Lothian, Strathclyde and Stirlingshire, and is valid from 1500 on Thursday until 0600 on Friday. While eastern areas will see some rain at times today, particularly during the late afternoon and evening, the heaviest rain will generally affect western parts of the country.
  • During the second half of Friday morning, strong to gale force westerly winds will push wintry showers across the country, these most frequent across the northwest. These will turn increasingly to sleet/snow later on Friday, but the showers will gradually die out during the evening. Therefore, we are currently not expecting any significant, widespread impact on the transport network.
  • Saturday morning will see another band of rain and hill snow quickly moving across Scotland from the southwest, clearing most places during the afternoon. The rain will be accompanied by strong to gale force south to southwesterly winds across the country. These will be strongest in the northwest, but it will be a blustery day everywhere, with the winds starting to die down during the overnight period into Sunday.
  • The need for Yellow (Be Aware) Warnings for ice/hill snow later on Friday and the rain/winds on Saturday, will be considered on Friday morning.

Warnings
A Yellow (Be Aware) Warning for Rain (based on an assessment of a medium likelihood of LOW impacts) has been issued for Thu/Fri. This covers Dumfries & Galloway, the western Borders, West Lothian, Strathclyde and Stirlingshire, and is valid from 1500 on Thursday until 0600 on Friday. This will be updated later this morning, but there are currently no significant changes expected.
The need for Yellow (Be Aware) Warnings for ice/hill snow on Friday and the rain/winds on Saturday, will be considered on Friday.
Full details of the Yellow Warning for Rain can be seen on our website http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=map or on Hazard Manager. An indication of the type of low impacts we might expect with rain is available here: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/guide/weather/severe-weather-advice
Please take the time to have a look at this morning’s Flood Guidance Statement, which gives more detailed information on the flood risk across Scotland over the next five days. The ‘Specific areas of concern’ map is particularly detailed and provides some more local information.
From Flood Risk Team – conversation with SEPA (not for onward circulation)
  • Cree, Newton Stewart will be slightly higher than the 26 Jan 2013 but not as high as 30 December. John Bell has been contacted to install the floodgates in the fisherman’s entrances. JB said the water was nearly in the car park on the 26 Jan so will put out ‘Car Park liable to flooding’ signs.
  • Small watercourses in Gatehouse of Fleet & Kirkcudbright area will see a significant rise and may cause flooding.
  • Annan and Esk will be similar to the 30 December 2013 event. Apart from Moffat the FRMT are not aware of any flooding in this area but are trying to contact Mark Simpson.
Mike / Bob,
Can the screens in the areas highlighted above be checked today especially Moffat.
