Here are a couple of videos of some beautiful Italian music by Pietro Locatelli and Ferdinando Carulli.
Serenade pour Flûte et Guitare Opus 109 No.2 ~ Ferdinando Carulli.
Andante Sostenuto ~ Allegretto
Ferdinando Maria Meinrado Francesco Pascale Rosario Carulli to give him his full title was one of Europe's most celebrated and successful guitarist composers of the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. Many of the pieces now regarded as Carulli's greatest were initially turned down by the publishers as being considered too hard for the average player, and it is likely that many masterpieces were lost this way. Undeterred, Carulli started publishing his pieces himself. After leaving Naples in the early 19th century Carullli spent a little time in Milan before moving to Paris which was regarded at the time as the musical capital of the world, he spent the rest of his life there. In the 1830s, many European guitarists followed Carulli to Paris, apparently attracted by his personality. The Serenade is a beautiful and charming pieces which perfectly suits the salon style environment of this performance.
Sonata in G Major ~ Pietro Locatelli.
Adagio ~ Allegro ~ Largo ~ Allegro
Locatelli was an Italian composer and violinist. He was born in Bergamo and as a child prodigy, he was sent to study in Rome under the direction of Arcangelo Corelli. He composed mainly for the violin although he also wrote a cello sonata, trio sonatas, concerti grossi and a set of flute sonatas. His early works show the influence of Arcangelo Corelli, while later pieces are closer to Antonio Vivaldi in style.
During 2011 we are celebrating a decade of playing together professionally and are giving many concerts, workshops alongside making various recordings throughout the year. These recordings were made by our good friends Frank, Wilhelmien and Bas at the Gitaarsalon in Enkhuizen, Holland.

Everyone enjoyed the fourth Senior Citizens' Social Evening presented by Kirkmahoe Community Council - the audience of more than 30 senior citizens, the helpers and, not least, the performers.
This year we were privileged to be entertained by a group of nine, very talented, senior pupils from Wallace Hall Academy.
Under the expert guidance of Kelvin Riley and Hannah Ferguson they put together a superb variety of music, ranging from an Hungarian Czardas on the violin (Amy Muirhead), 'I Dreamed a Dream' from Les Miserables (Amie Kirkpatrick), piano solos (Martha Ferguson), jazz pieces on the saxaphone (Erin Williamson), French accordion music (Adele Queen) and Scottish ensemble music (Erin McGinley and Grace Dale).
The audience were given a chance to join in and surprised the performers by their fine singing of traditional and modern songs, and of course there was the usual refreshment and raffle.
Thanks very much to the young people who gave up their time for the event and gave us such a good evening, we wish them all success in the future.( Jean Muir)
Over 90 people came out to Kirkton Church on the afternoon of 23 January, shaking off the late Winter chill and seeking the warmth of live music with a like minded audience at the third Kirkmahoe Concert. There is no doubt that some of us were not quite sure what to expect. But what followed exceeded most of our expectations.
Matthew McCallister (guitar) and Feargus Hetherington (violin) are graduates of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where they met as students. They play under the name Maelasta. With wit and intelligence they took us though a programme of duets and solo pieces that spanned the classical world, contemporary composition, Scottish traditional and tango. For some it was the 18th and 19th century pieces by Molino, Paganini and Gragnani that stirred the spirit. Others were taken to another place by the solo guitar performance of Cuban composer Leo Brouwer’s Suite Number 2. The duet on Libertango was also outstanding. Then there were beautiful performances of Scottish tunes: by Chris Stout (who will be playing at Kirkmahoe in late May), by Ronald Stevenson (once the Rev Almond’s music teacher, we learned) and not forgetting Peter Maxwell Davies’ much-loved Farewell to Stromness.
Matthew and Feargus explained the pieces, joked with the audience and each other and then switched effortlessly to playing of great virtuosity and passion. We liked them and loved their music. At the end the applause rang on, the feet were stomping and there were cries for more. The encore was a very well received piece by Django Reinhardt. Then to finish off, Feargus played Ae Fond Kiss, unaccompanied and unadorned. The audience hummed along beautifully, content with the feast of music they had enjoyed. Tea and cakes followed, kindly organised by members of the Church. We got to chat to the musicians and linger on for a while. It was great way to spend an afternoon in January. And also time to look forward to the next Kirkmahoe Concert on 26 March, when the Joel Allison Quartet will play a set of ‘chamber jazz’ in the beautiful surroundings of the Barony Church! Hamnataing
It was a cold, snowy and frosty night, but our faithful Carol Singers turned out to sing for the Village, which was looking very festive. The amount raised and the Charity to gain will be announced shortly.
