New Pavement to Church

Whilst work was ongoing with the Power Cables, we also had workmen preparing and laying a new pavement to the Church! Kirkton was a busy place.

The new pavemement will make it safer for people to walk from the village to the church.

Thank You

The carol singers would like to thank everyone in Kirkton who gave so generously on Sunday and for the goodwill as we went round, and also Kirkton Hall Committee who treated us to winter warmers afterwards.

We raised £121.75 which has been sent to the Sam Leask Memorial Fund which has been set up by Sam's family to improve the playground facilities in Kirkton.

Wishing you all a good Christmas and New Year

Our Carol Singers Dec 2012

On Sunday,16th December, a small but enthusiastic group of singers, ably supported by cornet and euphonium set off to disturb the peace and quiet of Kirkton village. Hazards caused by potholes, piles of earth from the recent excavations and 'dead' streetlights were ignored. Three young collectors intrepidly rang every doorbell, tearing the occupants from their favourite television programmes.

We sang a variety of carols and songs, from 'Away in a manger' to 'White Christmas' and were delighted by the response of many who came out to listen and donated generously to the Sam Leask memorial fund. We were even treated to warming fruit teas by one kind resident!

Once the whole village had been visited, we retired to the village hall, where a spread of mulled wine, with a non-alcoholic option, soup and cakes and nibbles was provided by a band of supporters.

The total raised was over £121. Thanks to all who donated so generously.

We would be very happy to see more singers next year. All are welcome!

Icy Roads Please drive with EXTREME CARE

Just to let every-one know that the road from Duncow School up to Riddingwood (C3N) HAS NOT BEEN GRITTED! Very dangerous indeed especially at the bridge and the bad bend at Duncow Estate.
The C4N from Locharbriggs to Ae has not been gritted. The patch at St Blane’s Cemetery is treacherous.

 Thanks

Carol Singing Sunday 16th December 2012

Hello Carol Singers and Supporters

We have fixed the carol singing in Kirkton for Sunday 16th December, meeting at the pump at 6.30pm

The Village Hall committee are again supporting us by allowing use of the hall afterwards, and they have also offered to organise refreshments

I would like to propose that the collection should be in aid of the Sam Leask Memorial Fund, which Katharine and Julian are setting up with the objective of improving the play park in Kirkton.

Please let me know if you can help in any way or have any questions, and also please tell your friends!

Thanks
Jean Muir

Laying Power Cables Underground

We are all aware of the work being done in Kirkton at the moment.
Laying the power cables underground should help diminish the number of power cuts this area has experienced in the past. Power lines have been affected by high winds, and every few years Scottish Power has had to get trees lopped to prevent entanglement in power lines. Over time this proves to be expensive, so although, what is happening now is a major investment, it should save the power company money in the long term.

The lads who are working here, travel from many different parts of Scotland every day....... Glasgow, Livingston, The Borders, whilst some are from the local area. They have been working in some terrible weather conditions,.....teeming rain almost every day...now sub zero temperatures...... but all have remained cheerful throughout.

Here are some photos to record this. It has been requested that Kirkmahoe News informs all the ladies that the good looking one is called David!!!

This phase shows getting ready to link up the new cables to the main supply.
Jim & Selwyn preparing for cables to be linked to the main aupply.

Attaching new cable to the main supply

Thanks to everyone for their patience whilst work is ongoing!

Sharon King and the Reckless Angels play Kirkmahoe Concerts 3 November 2012

The next of the Kirkmahoe Concerts will feature Sharon King and the Reckless Angels – at Dalswinton Village Hall, on Saturday 3 November, 7.30pm.

An award winning Scottish songwriter with a talent for spinning yarns, Sharon King continues to build a reputation for vibrant, funny, relaxed and intimate live shows. Her trio is made up by Amy Geddes (fiddle, viola, vocals) and Vera van Heeringen (guitar, mandolin, vocals). Edinburgh-based Sharon is a natural raconteur with an easy grace. Her astute observations on Scottish life come through in her contemporary song-writing style, wrapped in easy banter and peppered with tales of her travels. Colours and textures are woven through the narratives by the mandolin, fiddle, viola and voices of The Reckless Angels.

The band will be featuring material from their latest album Nothing=Everything.  King’s song writing has developed to award winning standards and her vocals are captivating, pure and clear.  Another great Kirkmahoe Concert in the making and not to missed!

Tickets £8 from The Midesteeple in Dumfries, Thomas Tosh in Thornhill or call David Clark on 01387  740045.

Flight Tracker Site

How often have we looked up to see vapour trails in the sky? Even if it is overcast, we can usually hear the sound of planes overhead. Do we ever wonder where those planes have some from, and where they are going to?
Well now we can find out exactly what plane is above us, where it came from, and where it is going to. We can even get a view from the cockpit by using this fascinating site which tells us about every flight which is in the air all over the world!
If you know someone who is flying, you can track their flight and know the moment it has landed, which is useful if there are any flight delays.
Here are the details which you can save to your favourites and use either out of interest, or to track your friends and family when they are flying, or you might just want to have some fun using this wonderful site.

Further improvements to Kirkton Village Hall

Following the extensive improvements completed in 2010, Kirkton Village Hall is now set to benefit from some further refurbishment after securing additional funding.

Two awards, totaling over £8,000, have been received from Dumfries & Galloway Council’s Village Hall Improvement Scheme and Awards for All.

The money will be used to sand and re-varnish the Hall floor, and to repair all the wooden windows in the building. Work has already started, and is expected to be completed by the end of September 2012.

Events are continuing as usual in the Hall, while the works are in progress.

News from Matthew McAllister

Dear friends & colleagues,

I hope this email finds you all well and enjoying the last days of summer.

I have just arrived back in Scotland after a great summer tour with flautist Aisling Agnew. Our concerts took us from Switzerland to England with America and Germany in between. The tour featured performances at the 40th National Flute Association of America Convention in Las Vegas, the 21st Iserlohn Guitar Symposium in Germany and the 8th International British Flute Society Convention in Manchester alongside many other stops along the way.

Whilst in America we stopped off at Guitar Salon International in Los Angeles and made some videos on a selection of very interesting guitars including a 1968 Ignacio Fleta and a 1974 David Rubio 'PF'.

You can see those performances in the videos below which feature music by Sebastien Vachez and Antonio Lauro.

Dimitrious Douros from the South Bay Guitar Society attended our San Francisco concert and shot a video of Piazzolla's Libertango during the gig.
