SWSEIC would like to invite all wildlife watchers and recorders in SW Scotland to our autumn online gathering on Saturday 13th November. The event is open to birders, entomologists, botanists, mycologists - in fact anyone at all, amateur or professional, beginner or experienced, with an interest in our local wildlife.

Continued uncertainties regarding the COVID-19 situation prevent us from hosting a full day in-person conference-style event as we would normally, but instead we are joining with our colleagues from Garnock Connections Landscape Partnership to bring you a half-day of online presentations.

An important part of our annual recorders gathering is also networking with other recorders. Therefore we will also be running some expert-led walks to enable small groups of recorders area to meet up in the Garnock Connections area and improve their recording and ID skills for particular species groups. Please note that the walks are not taking place on the same day as the conference and places are limited.

The online event is free and there is a small charge for each of the walks.

Finding and Identifying Wildlife

Sunday 7th November, 2-3.30pm
Stevenston Beach Local Nature Reserve, North Ayrshire

You don’t have to travel to remote places to find wildlife – there’s a lot to be discovered in and around towns and villages. Aimed at beginners and less experienced wildlife recorders, join SWSEIC and Garnock Connections staff for a short walk on the beach and along footpaths around Stevenston Local Nature Reserve to see what we can find – birds, plants, marine life or anything else. We will be demonstrating the use of some smartphone apps to help you with identification and recording.

Kirkton Village Hall AGM This Friday- 15th October at 7.30 pm

Kirkton Village Hall

AGM

This Friday- 15th October at 7.30 pm

Hi everyone,

This is just to offer you a warm invitation to attend the AGM of Kirkton Hall Committee which will take place this Friday in the hall.

It is an especially important meeting as the change from a Charity to a Scottish Incorporated Charitable Organisation requires to be confirmed. This change has been made to protect committee members from liability in hall related issues, and is the culmination of a great deal of administrative work over a period of two years.

In addition, the thorny issue of the sustainability of the running of the hall must be addressed. The present committee is severely under strength and “ageing”. It very much needs an input of new blood.

There is a definite possibility that the use of the Hall could be severely curtailed if new committee members do not come forward.

We need people with new ideas for using the Hall.

As so often, institutions like the hall committee when viewed from the outside look like a very large commitment. This is definitely NOT the case, but a vibrant committee (preferably younger!) is needed to ensure that all aspects necessary for the successful continuation of the activities are maintained.

I hope you can make it on Friday.

Regards

David Muir (Chair)

Launch of Challenge Poverty Week 2021 – Monday 4th October – Sunday 10th October 2021

Dumfries & Galloway Council are very happy to again be supporting Challenge Poverty Week 2021 – the annual Campaign Awareness Week delivered by The Poverty Alliance throughout Scotland. Challenge Poverty Week is designed to highlight that poverty is a problem we can solve and to showcase solutions we can all get behind.

We very much hope that we can achieve together all of the following this Challenge Poverty Week 2021.

  • To raise a unified voice against poverty and show that we all want to live in a more just and equal Scotland.
  • To build awareness and support for solutions to poverty.
  • To change the conversation around poverty and help end the stigma of living on a low income.

On each day during Challenge Poverty Week, we will focus on a different theme and these themes each have accompanying key messages. Due to the ongoing Covid 19 Pandemic, all of our information will again be made available online and we encourage everyone to log onto our new Challenge Poverty Week Pages each day to receive all of the help and assistance which will make their lives easier. All of the solutions offered are designed to help you to increase your incomes and reduce your costs which we know if the quickest way to escape from poverty.
