Dangers from pylons in the snow and ice
A few years ago there was heavy snow and ice. When snow and ice forms along the lines between the pylons the weight of it brings the pylons down. Are we to have this visited upon us in the winter?
This from the Met Office. (We have to remember that we are in Scotland so we have more likelihood of this happening here.)
" Energy supply & Telecommunications.
Snow and ice accumulate on transmission cables, trees, masts and pylons, especially when the temperature is close to freezing. The additional weight can lead to sagging of cables and collapse of trees and masts. Collapse of pylons is exceptional in the UK, but has occurred in other countries in these conditions. Ice on electricity cables can affect transmission. The most frequent impacts are from falling trees that pull down local transmission cables with them."
Other such dangers can be found in this report from Bill Bates Electrical Inspector of the Health and Safety Executive. Click here for this report
You still have time to get your objections in to SPEN via email.

Safety and overhead power lines
Note the flames in the background |
Safety Campaigns by SPEN
In SPEN's own literature they have campaigns to show how dangerous overhead lines can be especially to farmers working with farm machinery. It shows that if a power line comes down it is still live.
Of course they would not have to have safety campaigns if they buried their cables to remove the danger, and leave the countryside unspoilt for future generations.
Here is the link to SPEN'S safety campaign literature
"Last year, there were 89 incidents on agricultural land in North Wales and Merseyside, and over the past five years there have been more than 800 incidents in the same area. The majority of these incidents are caused by power lines falling as a result of adverse weather conditions, but can also be caused by accidental contact with overhead power lines.
In July, one of our teams attended an incident in Wrexham after a farmer clipped an 11,000 volt power line with machinery. The incident resulted in a power cut for 17 nearby properties, as well as causing damage to the overhead line. Fortunately no fatalities or injuries occurred, however, direct contact with live electrical equipment, even at the lowest voltage, can be fatal - overhead power lines can carry electricity at up to 400,000 volts."
Is not our area and agricultural area? They show that they know of the dangers. Why inflict this on us?

Pylons Article in today's Standard
Have you seen the article in today's Standard. If not here it is.
Groups across the region are cooperating in their efforts to stop the pylons. However SPEN still thinks the public is gullible enough to believe that this is necessary because the existing transmission network needs to be upgraded (by implication that our household electricity supply is in danger), with no mention that the primary purpose is to export wind energy or that underground or undersea options have been considered.
We're no daft ye ken..........
Carrutherstown CC have sent in an excellent objection, as has Alan James from Dunscore.
If you have not already sent in your letter, there is till time...........JUST.
You can use the done for you letters, or take bits out of the other letters and use as your own.
The more objections the better the chance of stopping this and getting SPEN to use the undersea route.
If you would like your letter published you can add it to the Visitors Posts section of KAP our Facebook page, and/or email it to kirkmahoe@gmail.com and it will be added to our website.

Dog fouling.DNA base is being developed.
HOW DANGEROUS IS DOG MUCK?
Dog faeces is the scourge of parks and pavements, and figures suggest that 1,000 tonnes of poo is created each day in the UK alone.
In addition to looking and smelling terrible, the faecal matter can harbour antibiotic-resistant strains of E. coli and parasites - which, when left on the ground, can seep into sewers, rivers and the sea.
And now scientists have developed a new genetic test to figure out the extent to which dogs are spreading this bacteria through our waterways.
In the journal Environmental Science and Technology, Orin Shanks and his colleagues said waterways are susceptible to many sources of faecal contamination, including sewage leaks and droppings from farm animals and wildlife.
Scientists have also found that sand on beaches can contain up to 100 times as much faecal matter than there is in the water.
This is because microbial communities tend to decay much slower on beach sand than in the water.

Negative Thinking V Positive Thinking
How many of you are just accepting that this will happen?
Saying things like Wheels within Wheels.
Oh it's already decided. They wont listen to us.......Well if you think like this the likelihood is that the pylons will go ahead.

Beautiful graceful whooper swans and geese migrate 2716 kilometres =1 687.64416 miles from Svalbard to Caerlaverock and back every year. Imagine what will happen to them after travelling all those miles and reaching within sight of Caerlaverock when they will fly into these cables which SPEN is so keen for us to have. Whole flocks will be wiped out.
Help us to stop this happening. We need a strong voice.

Spanish Company has undergrounded lines from Spain to France do they care about Scotland ?
SPEN is owned by Iberdrola, a Spanish Multinational company. Can it be right that it can compulsorily purchase Scottish land and build an immense eyesore in the form of an 175km line of 50m tall pylons across some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain? I cannot believe that a Scottish company would get away with doing the same to the Pueblos Blancos in Andalucia or the Rioja region.
Yet
this is what is happening here in Dumfries and Galloway, in order to transport
electricity, which is not for use in Scotland, to England in order to make
maximum profits for a Spanish company. The fact that our existing
infrastructure is old is not an issue. If adequately maintained, it would
remain fit for its existing purpose for many years.
It is also interesting that in
2008, Red Eléctrica de España (REE) and Réseau de Transport d'Electricité (RTE)
have signed an agreement to create the company Inelfe, to construct a new 64.5
kilometre interconnection line between the towns of Santa Llogaia, near
Figueres (Spain), with Baixas, near Perpignan (France). The
interconnection link is completely underground and has been housed in a
concrete trench, except for the stretch that crosses the Pyrenees that runs
through an 8.5 kilometre tunnel that runs parallel to the high-speed railway
line. If that strategy is used there, why not here?
