Kirkmahoe Concerts-Matthew McCallister and Aisling Agnew

A non-profit community endeavour, featuring high quality live music from across the spectrum of classical, jazz, folk and fusion – using local venues and with an emphasis on modest tickets prices.

Matthew’ s reflective and lyrical classical guitar playing thrilled the Kirkmahoe audience back in January 2011 and now he returns with flautist Aisling Agnew. The duo recently celebrated their 10th anniversary and are well known across Europe and further afield for their repertoire of classical, traditional and contemporary pieces. Their programme will include Tangos from
Argentina, Choros from Brazil, and Baroque Sonatas from Italy and Germany, alongside music from France and Malta. Price: £8

Renewable Energy and its many forms

Driving around this area it will be obvious to the observer that many of the rooftops now sport Solar Panels.

Although we do not get much sun here, the solar panels still produce energy to heat and light our homes. Those who have invested in them know that energy they use during daylight hours is created by the solar panels, and that there is a government incentive which allows solar energy units to be sold to the National Grid and so electricity bills are reduced, and you are paid for the energy you produce.



  Now Dumfries & Galloway Housing Partenrship (DGHP) has gone a step further than solar energy. It has invited its tenants to choose which type of energy they want. The choice being :- Air source, solar and ground source (geothermal).

Some have gone for air source which entails having a box with a fan fitted to the outside of your house which draws in air and acts like a refrigerator in reverse by delivering heated air to the house.


 



 

Others have chosen geothermal ground source energy. This is obtained by drilling 100 meters down into the earth, placing a pipe filled with antifreeze into the hole, which gathers the heat from the earth and pumps it back up the pipe into the house to power heating and lighting.

In fact some of the tenants have even got a mix of solar panels and geothermal heating.

Those who have adopted these forms of energy will no longer be at the mercy of continual price rises from the gas oil and electricity companies! How GOOD is that!!!!!

If you reside in the Parish but stay outwith the Village  you may reserve a spot on the Village Green.

Senior Citizens' Social Evening

The evening was well attended and was a great success.  Senior Citizens from all over the Kirkmahoe area came to be entertained with music from the Old Geezers, who were dressed in Country & Western style.There was a great Singalong session with songs from the likes of Cliff Richard, and Scottish songs which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

Joan Stroud read out some of her own excellent poetry.

The food was excellent. Mary Harkness gave Thanks to all involved with organising the event,and such was the success that many folks tarried in the Hall  after the entertainment was over.

A Social History Photograph

Here is a lovely photograph kindly sent to Kirkmahoe News by Morag and John Williams.
Taken in the middle of last century it depicts three village ladies in "peenies and slippers" having a really good laugh. It is thought to have been taken in the Quaw, at the side of Kenmuir.
