Dear
Scottish Power Energy Networks has confirmed that, following
consultation, they have decided not to press ahead with the Strategic
Reinforcement Project which would have seen an upgrade of power lines between
Auchencrosh in South Ayrshire, to Harker in Cumbria.
Changes in the UK Government subsidies for onshore windfarms
and the future mix of power generation in Scotland has been cited as forming
part of the decision that the South Ayrshire to Cumbria route would not be cost
effective.
A new proposal has been put forward which is restricted to an
upgrade of 30 miles between Kendoon and Tongland. Scottish Power Energy
Networks has stated that the revised proposal will provide the appropriate level
of infrastructure for our needs and a consultation on this is due to take place
in the autumn.
There was a great deal of concern about the original proposal
and the effect this would have on communities where new infrastructure was
required. These ranged from how it would impact the landscape to health and
safety issues. Many of these issues still concern the communities between
Kendoon and Tongland.
While I am very pleased that the beautiful countryside across
Dumfries and Galloway will be largely unaffected by the new proposal, I am also
mindful of the Scottish Government’s commitment to achieve 100% of our
electricity demand from renewable energy by 2020.
As Labour’s Spokesperson for Environment, Climate Change and
Land Reform, I am keenly aware of the need to pursue green energy if we are
going to seriously tackle climate change. Therefore my delight for the Dumfries
and Galloway area is tempered by my desire that we don’t lose sight of the need
for alternative green energy sources to be able to connect to the grid.
I will be reviewing the detail of the new proposals when they
are available and I would encourage you to continue your interest in this matter
buy contributing to the next consultation which is due in the autumn.

Scotland MSP
